      RICHARD SHERMAN and pianist GENADI ZAGOR, a native of Russia and prizewinner of several international competitions will perform works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, William Mathias and Frederick Delius

Richard Sherman, flute - Active as a soloist, orchestral musician, and recitalist, Richard is a dynamic performer of outstanding dramatic power. He received a bachelor of music degree from the Eastman School of Music, a master of music degree from Northwestern University, and had postgraduate study at the Royal College of Music in London.

      Sherman is former principal flute with the Rochester (New York) Philharmonic Orchestra, and principal flute with the Chautauqua (New York) Symphony Orchestra and the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. He has given performances with the Chicago Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony and the Toronto Symphony. He has performed as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, Youngstown Symphony, Lansing Symphony, and Chautauqua Symphony, among others.

Richard is the recipient of an ITT International Fellowship, and the Henri Cohn Memorial Prize at Tanglewood for most outstanding fellowship student. He has given master classes throughout the country, including Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, Louisiana State University, Ohio State University, Arizona State University, Brigham Young University, and Youngstown State University. He has given master classes/recitals at the Sydney Conservatory in Sydney, Australia, and at the Queensland Conservatory in Brisbane, Australia.

      His recordings with pianist Ralph Votapek, Flute Sonatas and American Landscape, are released on Summit Records. The French Album, with pianist Kimberly Schmidt, was released in January 2006 to critical acclaim. Fanfare's Jerry Dubin writes: "I cannot imagine any of this music being more beautifully or lovingly played than it is here..." Sherman's most recent album, French Album II, Homage to Pedagogy, with pianist Ralph Votapek, was released on the Blue Griffin Recording label in 2012.

Genadi Zagor Piano, A native of Russia, Genadi graduated from Krasnodar's Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music and went on to study at the Moscow State Conservatory with Mikhail Mezhlumov, one of Russia's leading teachers. He later moved to Israel where he served as an assistant to Professor Alexander Tamir at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance.

      Zagor holds prizes from the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition, the Leeds International Pianoforte competition, the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, the Francois Shapira Music Competition, and was a recipient of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship for outstanding artists. After winning the prestigious National Piano Competition in Tel-Aviv, he appeared in a special recital at the Presidential Palace for Ezer Weizman.

     Zagor frequently appears on Israeli National Television and Radio. He has performed to critical acclaim in recital and orchestral appearances around the world with the Moscow State Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, Jerusalem Symphony, Gotham City, Northbrook Symphony, South Bend Symphony, Green Bay Symphony, and Mariinsky Theatre orchestras. Throughout his career, he has performed on concert stages in Russia, Israel, Japan, England, Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and the U.S.

     Zagor moved to the United States in 2000 and studied piano at Indiana University South Bend, where he served as adjunct lecturer in piano upon his graduation. He earned his Master of Music degree in piano performance from Michigan State University, where he is also completing a Doctor of Musical Arts under Deborah Moriarty. Zagor has won top prizes from the World Piano Competition, San Antonio International Piano Competition, and the Grand Prize at the D?Angelo Young Artists Competition. Recent solo performances were at the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo as a part of the "World Rising Stars" series, and the Toradze Piano Studio Rachmaninoff Marathon.

     For the past six years, Zagor served on the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa?s School of Music. As an adjudicator, he served on the panel of the Iowa Music Teachers Piano Association and the Music Teachers National Association conferences performing and presenting new works by Iowa composers. In 2015 he joined the faculty of Michigan State University as instructor of piano. 

 Sivan Magen

Harpist Extraordinaire

Praised by the press as ?a magician?, virtuoso Sivan Magen transforms the harp into an instrument of unheard-of depth of colors and range of expression. Jerusalem born Magen has appeared as a soloist across the US, South America, Europe and Israel, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, and the Sydney Opera House


The only Israeli to have ever won the International Harp Contest in Israel, Magen is a winner of the Pro Musicis International Award and in 2012 was chosen by a committee headed by Dame Mitsuko Uchida as the winner of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. He appeared as a soloist across the US, South America, Europe and Israel, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Vienna Konzerthaus, and with orchestras such as the Israel Philharmonic, the Strasbourg Philharmonic, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony, the Sydney Symphony and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. In fall 2014 he had been invited by Carnegie Hall to return for a recital in celebration of the American release of his first solo CD for Linn records,Fantasien, a recital which also included the world premiere of the Carnegie Hall commissioned Fantasy for solo harp by American composer Sean Shepherd.


Aside from his activity as a soloist, Mr Magen is an avid chamber musician and has appeared in Paris (Salle Gaveau), NY (Allice Tully Hall, the Metropolitan Museum, Bargemusic), with Musicians from Marlboro, and at the Marlboro, Kuhmo , Giverny, and Jerusalem International Chamber Music festivals, collaborating with artists such as Nobuko Imai, Shmuel Ashkenazi, Gary Hoffman, Michel Letiec, Charles Neidich, Carol Wincenc, Emmanuel Pahud, tenor Nicholas Phan, soprano Susanna Phillips and members of the Guarneri and Juilliard Quartets.

Polonaise Brilliante

   Cellist Carl Donakowski and pianist Zhihua Tang present Frederic Chopin's dazzling Polonaise and Schubert's "Arpeggione" Sonata. In 2013 they collaborated on a Chopin work in one of the concerts voted as an audience favorite. We are thrilled to again have them combine their expressive and dynamic talents on our stage. 

Cellist Carl Donakowski pursues a disting1uished international career in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Early in his career he was a finalist in the Mendelssohn Competition in Berlin. Since then his recital performances have been enjoyed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC; Merkin Hall in New York City; and aired on WQRS Detroit, WQXR New York, and Südwestfunk Baden-Baden. He has performed at the Manitou, Fontana, Staunton, Tanglewood, Bay View, and Beethoven music festivals. As a member of the West End Chamber Ensemble he was Artist-in-Residence with the Chamber Music America Rural Residency Chamber Music Initiative.


As a member of the Arcos Trio, Mr. Donakowski has performed on four continents and was recently awarded an Artistic Excellence grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to perform and record piano trios by Latin American composers on the Centaur label.


Of his performances at the Fontana Festival a reviewer wrote ?Cellist Carl Donakowski is ideally suited to perform these romantic works. His tone was rich in resonance and passionate in approach, displaying the big sound that could sustain a charming longing.?


As an educator Donakowski is Professor of Cello at James Madison University School of Music in Harrisonburg, VA where he received the distinguished teaching award. For over a decade he has taught as Artist-in-Residence at the Bay View Music Festival near Petoskey. He has also served on the faculties of Central Michigan University School of Music, Alma College and CelloSpeak at Bryn Mawr college. He is a frequent presenter at the American String Teachers Association national conference and contributor to American String Teacher. He served as president of the Michiana Cello Society and currently edits the Cello Forum for the Virginia String Teachers Association.


Donakowski was a student of Janos Starker at Indiana University. He also studied with Timothy Eddy and William Pleeth. 

Pianist Zhihua Tang was born in Shanghai, China and studied at Shanghai conservatory, Indiana University, University of Michigan, and Michigan State University. Her teachers include Menahem Pressler, Martin Katz, Deborah Moriarty and Dady Mehta. In addition, she has been a frequent performer in master classes conducted by distinguished pianists such as Joseph Kalichstein, Mark Durrand, Anton Querti, John Perry, Russell Sherman and Paul Badura Skoda.


Her activities as a concerto soloist include performances with Detroit Civic Orchestra, Alma Symphony, Grosse Pointe Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra, Shanghai Ballet Orchestra and Shanghai Conservatory Orchestra.


As a chamber musician, Tang has collaborated with violinist Shmuel Ashkenasi, Robert       Chen, Yuval Yaron, Emmanuelle Boisvert, Yoonshin Song, Hai Xin Wu,  Cellist Robert deMaine, Hai Ye Ni, violist Mahoko Eguchi, James VanValkenberg, flutist Jeff Zook, Maxim Rubtsov, hornist Karl Pituch, bassoonist Robert Williams, oboist Dwight Parry, Soprano Molly Fillmore and Arianna String Quartet, among others. Tang has been a participant in numerous festivals including Aspen Music Festival, Gilmore Festival and Banff International Keyboard Festival.


Tang was top prize winner of the Beethoven Sonata Competition in Memphis, Tennessee (2005), the Central Division of the MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition (1995), Chopin Competition in Chicago (1994). She has also received honorable mention at XII International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland (1990).


Tang has been on faculty of Eastern Michigan University, Alma College, University of North Dakota and Central Michigan University, School of Music.
